Abstract

1,200,016. Feeding webs. MOUNT HOPE MACHINERY Ltd. 20 Sept., 1968 [21 Sept., 1967], No.44759/68. Heading B8R. An apparatus for guiding a web in a longitudinal path and for uncurling the selvages of the web comprises a pair of rotary wheels 12, 14 engaging each selvage and driven by an air motor 42, and two sensors 50 spaced apart the desired width of the web, and adapted to slow down the corresponding air motor 42 when the corresponding selvage moves outwardly. The axles of the wheels 12, 14 are mounted on bearings 22, 26 which can be angularly adjusted in spherical clamps 28, 32 on a U-shaped bracket 36 so that the rows of rubber teeth 12, 16 on the wheels interengage over an arcuate sector usually centred at the point y in Fig. 2. The axles may be longitudinally adjustable in their bearings. The air motor 42 drives the wheel 10 through reduction gears 23 and the other wheel 14 is driven by interengagement of the teeth. The air motors 42 are supplied with air through a solenoid valve 72, and through a filter 70, a pressure regulating valve 68 and a lubricator 66. The branch line to each motor 42 has a manual needle valve 62 and a bleed valve which is controlled by a sensor 50. The latter comprises a pivoted selvage contacting finger (48) carrying a conical valve element (47) seating in an air bleed passage (45) in a valve block (76). The finger is biased to close the valve and to contact the selvage by an adjustable spring (90). Photo-electric cells may be used to detect the selvages and variable speed motors used instead of air motors.
