Abstract

1276401 Automatic width control TURBO MACHINE CO 14 May 1970 [23 June 1969] 23362/70 Heading G3R [Also in Division B8 and D1] A continuous band of material 26, e.g. of filamentary tow, passes over a pivoted control frame 102 arranged to keep the width of the band constant, the frame comprising arms 56, 58 which present respectively a concave surface and a convex surface to the face of the band. Edge sensors 110, 112 monitor the band 26 and in response to deviations from a desired width, supply control signals to a pneumatic cylinder 80 which operates to pivot the frame 102 to effect the required correction. As shown, the band 26 is drawn first across the narrowing concave control arm 56 and width control is effected by the operation of the convex control arm 58 which is brought into contact with the face of the band 26 as required, the pair of feelers 110, 112 being arranged to contact a bar 116 when the band is too narrow whereby a solenoid actuated valve is energized to operate the pneumatic positioning cylinder 80. A second set of feelers may be provided to set an outer limit to the width of the band.
