Abstract
1,198,512. Extending ladders. R. D. WERNER CO. Inc. 18 July, 1967, No. 32936/67. Heading A6L. An extending ladder has a fly section 320 detachably connected to the base section 340 via an endless cable 354 running between fixed points on the base section. The cable may run round pulleys 350, 350' attached to the stiles (as shown), or a single cable may run up one stile, through the hollow top rung, down the other stile and back through a hollow lower rung (Figs. 13, 14, not shown), or run over a pulley attached to the top rung, and round the bottom rung, mid-way between the stiles (Fig. 1, not shown). The endless cable may be attached to the fly section by a bracket 330 engaging an apertured plate 360 (as shown) or by a slotted bracket fixed to the fly section engaging a depending loop on the cable (Figs. 9, 13, not shown) or by a hook 70 (Fig. 5) connected to the cable end and passing round a rung 42 on the fly section and engaging the cable at a point above the rung. Tubular nylon sleeves 220 (Fig. 15, not shown) may be employed in the ends of the tubular rungs through which the endless cable is passed in the embodiment of Fig. 13 (not shown). The ladder may have pivoted feet 341a, and has outwardly facing channel section stiles, and is made of aluminium, wood, or fibre-glass.
