Abstract

1361486 Flexible ladders; fire escapes C J PROBETS 1 March 1972 [4 March 1971 24 May 1971] 5991/71 and 16556/71 Heading E1S A fire escape apparatus comprises a flexible ladder and means for securing one end thereof to a wall of a building, the ladder being attached at its upper end to a securing plate 3 having an aperture which is engageable over a stud 6 on a wall plate or like mounting secured to the wall, e.g. below a window, the aperture and a knob on the end of the stud 6 having idenitcal irregular shapes (one flat side, as shown) so orientated that after engagement of the aperture over the knob the plate 3 must be rotated, e.g. through 180‹, to permit the ladder to be thrown through the window, and the plate is retained by the knob; the ends of at least some of the rungs 22 carry spacer discs 23 which contact the wall to space the ladder therefrom. Self-tightening strap loops 24 are attached to the stiles, and may be slipped around a user's wrists to prevent falling in the event of being stranded on the ladder. The ladder stiles 21 may be of steel rope or of chain; a single rope is shown formed as a loop with the plate 3 attached at its mid-point. Alternatively each stile may comprise a pair of wires secured about a neck in each rung, or a chain receiving the rungs through its links.
