Antimony oxide for use as a pigment is rendered free from acid substance by treating it in water with an acid-neutralizing substance such as sodium carbonate, borax, precipitated chalk, or a mixture of these. As an example, a thin mixture of antimony oxide and water is treated with milk of lime and boric acid in such proportions as to leave the resulting solution alkaline to litmus but not sufficiently alkaline to give a precipitate of chalk on breathing into it. The quantity of lime required is about one half per cent. of the quantity of antimony oxide.
