Winch-actuated hoists with guided skips.- Means for hoisting loads on an inclined runway, such as skips for charging blast furnaces, comprise a counterbalanced carriage 2 carrying two pairs of drums 9, 10 connected by gears 12, 15, 14, Fig. 4, to which the ends of the hoisting ropes 4 are secured. The ropes 4 pass round pulleys at the top and bottom of the runway and round the drum of a winch. The lid 19 of the skip 20 is connected by chains 18 to a pair of drums 17 fixed to the gear 15, and is provided with a hook 24 tapered to receive the cross-head 25 connected to the bottom 26 of the skip. If the carriage is at the foot of the runway and the skip is in its filling position, actuation of the winch will unwind rope from the drums 9 and wind it on the drums 10, and at the same time wind the chains 18 on to the drums 17. When the lid of the skip comes against the framework 21, the gears 12, 15, 14 and the drums 9, 10 are held, and the carriage ascends the runway. At the top of the incline the winch is stopped and reversed, and the skip lowered.
