Abstract

1,196,233. Ion pumps; transit-time tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 9965/69. Heading H1D. In a discharge tube having a magnetic field provided by a plurality of columns of permanent magnets situated outside the tube envelope, a getter ion pump is arranged in one of the columns, so as to be cut by the magnetic field. In the klystron shown, the ion pump 10 is mounted in one of four symmetrically arranged columns (Fig. 2, not shown) of permanent magnets 6 having pole plates 5 and pole shoes 8 mounted on the drift tube 1. The pump is connected to the drift tube by a pipe 11, on either side of which cooling fins 12 are arranged. Either a second pump, or as shown, a non- magnetic or soft magnetic disc 9 of the same size as the ion pump 10, is included in a symmetrically disposed column of magnets, to maintain uniformity of the magnetic field. In another embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), the arrangement is applied to a magnetron having a pair of magnet columns.
