Abstract

1379184 Travelling-wave tubes SPERRY RAND CORP 7 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11059/73 Heading H1D The periodic permanent magnet focusing system of a travelling-wave tube is formed by a sequence of apertured polepieces 32, 33 and apertured spacers 35 which together constitute the vacuum envelope of the tube, and barshaped magnets 72 disposed between the polepieces at at least one surface 36 of the spacers. As described, the polepieces extend beyond the spacers in one direction, to receive the magnets an opposed spacer surfaces 36, 37, while the spacers extend beyond the polepieces in an orthogonal direction, to permit contact between the spacer surfaces 91, 92, 93 and a copper heat sink 90, or radiation surfaces or coolant channels (not shown). The magnets may be of a samarium cobalt alloy, held in place by adhesive or clamps; the spacers may be of copper and the polepieces of cold drawn steel; and the delay line of the tube may be a helix supported by beryllium oxide rods. The tube output arrangement may be that disclosed and claimed in Specification 1,374,697.
