Abstract
1,195,281. Wad assemblies. FEDERAL CARTRIDGE CORP. 31 May, 1967 [24 June, 1966; 10 May. 1967], No. 25195/67. Heading F3A. A wad column assembly for shotgun cartridges comprises an obturator member 62, Fig. 21, a shot contacting member 90 separate from the obturator member, and spacing means comprising a deformable wall 64, the wall being permanently deformable during loading of the cartridge to adjust the length of the assembly. The wall may be integral with either the shot contacting member or the obturator member and can take the form of a tubular member the end of which can be rolled over by a ram to a diameter not exceeding the diameter of the obturator member. Alternatively, if the diameter of the tubular member is equal to or slightly less than the internal diameter of a wall 63 of the obturator member, the end portion of the tubular member is rolled inwardly. In another embodiment the tubular member is collapsible about two elliptical portions 53, 54, Fig. 14, whose major axes are at right angles to one another. In a further embodiment the spacing means comprises the wall 17<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 16, of a cup-shaped obturator member. The internal surface of the wall may be tapered or provided with buttresses or the shot-contacting member may be oversized relative to the obturator member. The shot contacting member may have a conical portion (46, Fig. 11, not shown) extending inwardly from its base for regulating shot dispersal. The underside of the base of the shot-contacting member may be formed with a cross-shaped, collapsible member (40, Fig. 9, not shown). The members of the wad can be formed of polythene. The dimensions of the members, and the melt index and molecular weight of the polythene are disclosed.
