Abstract

1,194,126. Fluid mixing device; removal of solvent from polymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 25 April, 1968 [28 April, 1967 (2)], No. 19749/68. Headings B1B, B1C. [Also in Division C3] A fluid mixing device, see Fig. 1, comprises a stack of plates 10-24 so constructed and arranged as to form sets of chambers 27, 28 having orifices opening into a mixing zone 31, the orifices of chambers 27 being so arranged as to direct one fluid in the form of tubular sheaths along the length of the mixing zone and the orifices of chambers 28 being so arranged as to direct another fluid in the form of sheets towards the centre of the mixing zone so as to intersect the tubular sheaths of the first fluid. The fluids to be mixed may be supplied to the chambers 27, 28 via conduits 25, 26 formed by apertures in the plates. A third fluid may be introduced into the mixing zone from chamber 33 and the fluid mixture may be made turbulent by passage through a nozzle 32. The mixing device may be used for forming a mixture of solvent, elastomer, steam, and water, which is fed to a stripping tube 180, see Fig. 4, provided with a diffuser 210 and water supply ring 200 and leading into a flash chamber 190, where an initial separation of solvent and steam from elastomer occurs. The elastomer in the form of a solvent-swollen crumb is then passed to kettles 220, 230 where further solvent is removed by sparging a suspension of the crumb in water with steam.
