Abstract

1,192,620. Dyeing acrylonitrile/vinylidene chloride copolymers. HARDMAN & HOLDEN Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968 [24 Oct., 1967], No. 48225/67. Heading D1B. Textile materials comprising fibres of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride are dyed or printed by applying a dye liquor or printing paste containing a vat dye and thiourea dioxide as reducing agent, followed by oxidation to regenerate the vat dye in situ. Reduction is preferably effected by heating at 80-110‹C. and oxidation by alkaline, hydrogen peroxide. The use of emulsions containing trialkyl phosphate or dialkyl phthalate reduces the time for fixation of the leucto dyestuff on the fibres. Vat dye is preferably used as 1-10% by weight and thiourea dioxide as 1-15% by weight of the dyebath or printing paste. In Example 4 a 50:50 blend of polyamide and 80:20 acrylonitrile/vinylidene chloride fibre is printed with good coverage of both fibres.
