Cyanides; nitrides. --In the production of cyanides and nitrides in an electric furnace, the nitrogen or nitrogenous gas such as air is drawn into the charge from above by applying suction at a lower level. In an example. a furnace 1 having electrodes 2, 3 is provided with a suction device connected with a gas outlet 5, air being sucked downwards through the charge. Slag formed in the process is withdrawn by an opening 4. In the production of alkali cyanides, the cyanide is carried off by the gas current. When nitrides are being made, the slag outlet 4 is replaced by a larger opening through which the product is raked. The furnace may be partly closed at the top. Specification 22852/14 is referred to.
