Abstract
1,191,571. Sodium percarbonate. L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC. ANON. POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE. 19 Jan., 1968 [19 Jan., 1967], No. 3107/68. Heading C1A. Sodium percarbonate (2Na 2 CO 3 3H 2 O 2 ) is prepared by continuously adding a soluble salt of magnesium, calcium or zinc, to a concentrated solution of sodium carbonate which has been treated with sodium hydroxide solution to neutralize any sodium bicarbonate present, the quantity of magnesium, calcium or zinc salt added being between 0À1 and 3À0 mole per cent (preferably about 0À5 mole per cent) of the amount of sodium carbonate in the solution, separating the precipitate and contacting the purified solution of sodium carbonate at a temperature of 30-40‹ C. with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide containing between 30% and 90% by weight of hydrogen peroxide. The quantities of the solutions used are such that the molar ratios of hydrogen peroxide to sodium carbonate is between 1 and 2, and preferably between 1À3 and 1À5. The mixture may be seeded with a small quantity of percarbonate crystals in order to aid precipitation of sodium percarbonate. The amount of sodium hydroxide used to neutralize the bicarbonate in the solution may be up to 50 mole per cent in excess of that required for neutralization, but the excess is preferably about 20 mole per cent. The sodium percarbonate produced is fairly stable, but conventional stabilizers may be added to improve its stability.
