1,245,712. Continuous precipitation. J. H. CALBECK. 13 Jan., 1969, No. 2027/69. Heading C1A. A method of continuous precipitation is used to prepare the following pigments: (a) zinc sulphide from zinc sulphate, ammonium thiosulphate and ammonia; (b) zinc sulphide from zinc sulphate and sodium sulphide; (c) zinc sulphide from zinc chloride and barium sulphide; (d) zinc sulphide from zinc sulphate, hydrogen sulphide gas and ammonia; (e) zinc chromate from zinc sulphate and potassium chromate; (f) basic carbonate white lead from lead acetate, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide; (g) cadmium sulphide from reactions corresponding to (a), (b), (c) and (d) above. The method of continuous precipitation used comprises continuously introducing into a reaction vessel operating at a boiling temperature stoichiometric proportions of reactants capable of reacting to form an insoluble precipitate and a crystallizable water soluble salt wherein the reaction proceeds to form an insoluble precipitate and a salt crystallizable in the mother liquor saturated with said water soluble salt, continuously withdrawing a portion of resultant reaction mixture, separating the crystals and precipitate from the mother liquor, returning the separated mother liquor together with fine precipitate tothe reaction vessel wherein continuous boiling removes water added with the reactants at such a rate so as to maintain a constant volume in the reactor, and washing the mixture of precipitate and crystals in order to separate them and recover the precipitate.
