Abstract
Sodium percarbonate of low bulk density is formed by mixing solutions of hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate, and before the percarbonate has crystallized and before any oxygen is lost, feeding the mixture to a spray drier to yield solid percarbonate. The process is preferably continuous, metered solutions of hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate being mixed and fed directly to the spray drier. Saturated solutions of carbonate should be employed, preferably at 30 DEG C., whilst a 30 per cent or higher solution of peroxide may be employed, the relative amounts being those required by the formula Na2CO3.1 1/2 H2O2, or with a slight excess of peroxide. Sodium silicate, to act as a stabilizer, may be added to the carbonate solution before mixing. The air inlet and outlet temperatures of the spray drying chamber, are, according to a typical example, 100 DEG C. and 73 DEG C. respectively. The bulk density of the product varies from 15-25 pounds per cubic foot. Specifications 152,366, [Class 1 (iii)], 549,841 and 568,754 are referred to.
