Abstract
1,191,203. Spring drums; counterbalancing. RICHARDS-WILCOX OF CANADA Ltd. 28 March, 1968, No. 15030/68. Heading B8B. [Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A torsion spring assembly for biasing a rotatable shaft, e.g. a motor-drive shaft for raising and lowering a vertically slidable garage door, comprises a coil spring 19 through which the shaft 9 extends, a pair of collars 24, 25 in the form of stampings the end coils of the spring being welded to the collars. The collar 25 is bolted to a plate 11 which is fixed, e.g. to the garage structure, the collar 24 is bolted to a plate 27, having folds 30 to receive a lever for adjustment purposes, and to which is bolted two brackets 29 through which the shaft extends, the plate 27 being secured to the shaft 9 by screws 34 in the brackets 29. The spring is arranged to be stressed when the door is closed and relaxed when the door is open so that only a small motor is required to rotate the shaft to raise the door.
