This invention relates to an electric farm gate, which is operated by anapproaching vehicle, so that the gate may be opened or closed as desired.
An object of this invention is to provide a gate that is simple in construction, and operation, eiiicient and durable in use, and can be inexpensively manufactured for the purpose designed.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereiafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a gate embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is an end view thereof;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4--4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view of the adjusting plate and actuating arm and Figure 6 is a modified form of adjusting plate.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral l8 designates a gate which by means of pivot pins II is swingably mounted in the eyes |2 which are mounted in the cross bars l3 and M respectively. The bars l3 and M are secured at their ends in spaced horizontal relation to each other to the posts I5, which are embedded in the ground as shown in Figure 3. Mounted between the posts I5, is a housing l6, having a rear wall H, which is detachably secured to the housing by fasteners I8, and the housing rests on the base l9, on which is mounted the metal frame 20. An electric motor 2| is mounted in the frame and the drive shaft 22 thereof carries a bevelled gear 23 which engages a bevelled gear 24, of larger diameter, which is fixed to the vertical shaft 25 journalled at its end in the frame 20. A gear 26 fixed to the shaft 25 upwardly .of the gear 24 engages a gear 21 of larger diameter which is fixed to the vertical shaft 28 which is parallel to the shaft 25, and is also journalled in the frame 26. The frame 29 is secured to the base by fasteners 29, and apertured ears 30 receive the fasteners l8.
The shaft 28 extends outwardly of the housin H to have a perforated disc 3| secured to the upper end thereof. An operating rod 32 is provided with a hooked end that is adapted to be adjustably inserted in the perforated disc 3| to determine the amount of throw of the gate ID. The opposite end of the rod 32 is flattened as at 33 and provided with an elongated slot 34 which is adapted to engage the pin 35 fixed to the circu- 2 c a ms. (01. 39-7) lar plate .36, which by means of a flange 31 cut any conventional means. A sleeve 38 secured to "the gate by a flange 39 loosely mounts the substantially U-shaped lever 40 having an arm 4| adapted to be engaged by the rod 32 and an arm 42 pivoted at 43 to the rod 44, which extends longitudinally of the gate and is slidably mounted in the gate. The rod 44 extends beyond the gate to be fastened to the spring latch 45, which is secured to the gate l6 by fasteners 46.
An eye 41 in one of the posts I5 is connected to one end of a coil spring 48 while an eye 49 in the gate ID is connected to the other end of the spring.
When the gate is mounted, the posts I5 and housing [6 are mounted inwardly of the post 56 of the fence 5|, which is in vertical alinement with the post 50, and a keeper 53, secured to the post 52 by fasteners 54 engages the latch 45 to retain the gate closed.
In Figure 6, a bar or arm 54 is shown, which is provided with a square opening 55 for connection to the shaft 28 and spaced openings 56 for connection to the rod 32. Thus the arm or bar 54 can be substituted for the plate 36 if desired.
In operation, the motor 2| is controlled at a suitable location by any well known means for the energizing thereof. When the motor has been energized, it causes the rotation of the gears and subsequent rotation of the disc 3| which causes the rod 32 to swing the gate open by means of the engagement therewith of the stud 35 in the plate 36. As the rod 32 moves, it strikes the arm 4| of the lever 40, causing the lever to draw the rod 44 rearwardly and disengage the latch 45 from the keeper 53. Continued operation of the motor will close and lock the gate upon release of the arm 4| from engagement with the rod 32.
There has thus been provided a gate which is adapted to be opened and closed by a motor which is energized from a location remote from the gate. It is believed that from the foregoing description, the construction and operation of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A support and operating mechanism for a gate, comprising vertical supports, a gate, means swingingly mounting the gate from the supports, a housing mounted between said supports, vertical shafts joumaled in said housing, gear connections between said shafts, a motor in said housing, gear connections between said motor and one of said shafts whereby both shafts are rotated simultaneously, an apertured member on the upper end of one of said shafts, a circular plate fixedto said gate, an eccentrically mounted pin on-sa'id'piate; and an operatingrod having a hooked end engaged with a selected aperture in said apertured member, said operating rodprovided at its other end with an elongated slots through which said pin passes whereby movement of said apertured member. will operr or close the gate, and the aperturedmember and.
slotted end of said operating rod constituting means through the medium of which the 81180? 4 one of said arms, the other arm being arranged in contact with that end of the operating rod having the slotted end whereby said rod will retract the latch while being moved to open the ate.
