It is an object of this invention to provide a gate latch of the kind to be more particularly de-- scrihed herein-after for securing a gate inthe cl'esed position in abutment with the latch post. The gate' latch isparticularly adapted for use with gates which may be supported on-th-e hinge post fer swinging movement for abutment with either side of the latchpost.
Another object of this inv'ention is to provide agate latch of this kind which is mounted on the latch post for vertical sliding movement, being fric-tionally engaged with the mounting m '11s for frictionally securing the latch in a selectedvertical position.- 7 v semen-ether object of this inventioni's to provide a gate latch of this kind liav1-ng swing: ably mounted on a horizontal pin or bar for vertical swinging movement, and so mounted on the bar that the locking arms may tie-swung about the rod for engagement thereon in a position pposite from an original pos tion. Referring to the drawings, the numeral I ll designates generally a gate which is hingedly supported at one end on a fixed gate post H. The tubular member 2"! is slidably mounted on of a washer 32 which abuts the inner end of the tubular member 21.
The tubular member 21 when engaged on the rod 26, is normally disposed outwardly from the side edges of the latch post 14, being spring pressed into engagement with the stop pin 29, carried by the outer end of the rod 26.
A U-shaped locking arm 34 is fixed on the outer end of the tubular member 21 extending radially therefrom. The radially extending side arms 35 of the U-shaped member 34 are fixed to the tubular member 21 at their inner ends, and the bight portion 36 is fixed to the outer ends of the arms 35. In the normal position of the looking member 34, the innermost of the side arms 35 will be disposed outwardly'from the side wall of the latch post 14, so that when the gate ill is in the locked'position, the inner side of the gate will abut the outer wall of the'latch post l4 and the inner arm 35 of the locking member 36 will engage the outer side of the gate for clamping the gate between the outer side of the gate post (4 and the innermost arm 35 A handle 31 is fixed to the tubular or cylindrical member 21, on the opposite side thereof from the locking arm 34. The handle 31 is formed of an elongated rod extending radially outwardly from the tubular member 21 and may be disposed inwardly from the locking member 34. In the open position of the latch 15, the locking member 34 and handle 31 will be disposed in a substantially horizontal plane, and in the locking position of the latch 15 the locking bar 34 will depend from the lower side of the tubular member 21' and the handle 31 will extend vertically upwardly therefrom.
In the use and operation of the gate latch l5, described above, the gate I3 is initially moved to a closed position whereupon the extreme outer end of the gate will abut one side of the latch post 14. The latch IE will be slidably adjusted along the bracket l6 so that the rod 26 and tubular members 21 will be disposed immediately above the upper edge of the horizontal bar of the gate. When the locking members 35 are disposed in a downwardly extendingrelation to the shaft or rod 26, the inner arm 35 of the locking member will engage the outer surface of the gate Ill for limiting the outward swinging movement thereof. The inner surface of the gate (0 will engage the outer surface of the latch post I4 so that the gate is clamped between the locking member 34 and the gate post I l. The same latch l5 may be used on the gate pin when the gate pin is loosened from the hinge connection with the hinge post i I for swinging movement on the other side of the latch post I4.
