Mine and colliery signals.-Mine signalling apparatus of the kind having two pointers, each with a ratchet wheel, is provided with a third ratchet wheel carrying a plate bearing the word " men " which is exhibited through an opening in the dial when three signal impulses are given. The pointers are moved step by step by a projection M on a sliding rod K engaging the ratchet wheels. Provision is made for operating the rod K from various levels by means of corresponding rods D, E, E<1> engaging a cross-head L on the rod K. The pointer B has a pin N engaging the pointer C, so that both pointers move together, the pointer B returning to zero after a pause under'the control of a dash-pot device J, a lever P connected to the piston of the dash-pot releasing the detent through a cord connexion T. The lever P and piston are raised when the first signal impulse is given by a projection on the rod K. The pointer C remains until its detent is released by a rod U operated from the engine. Raising a rod D, E, or E<1> also raises a corresponding plate to exhibit through an opening between words indicating the level. This plate is retained raised by a spring catch until the pointer C returns to zero, when the plate is also returned by levers Y engaged by a pin on the ratchet wheel. The free ratchet wheel bearing the " men " plate is moved step by step with pointers, and returns with the pointer B except when three impulses are given, in which case a detent XA engages a recess in the ratchet and retains the plate until released by a rod XC arranged to be operated from the shaft indicator at any desired point in the travel of the cage. The detent of the pointer B is held out of engagement with its ratchet by a cam surface when more than three impulses are given. When " 9 " is signalled from " shaft," a detent XD prevents return of the pointer C until " 10 " has been signalled.
