Abstract

110,030. Young, n. G. Oct. 9, 1916. Mechanical telegraphs; mine signals. -In sep-bystep mine and like signalling apparatus of the non-cumulative kind having two ratchet wheels, the first moved on each signal impulse, and serving to drive the second which operates the pointer through a unidirectional clutch, means are provided whereby a single-impulse signal is accompanied by a qualifying word indication " start " or ''stop " according to whether the engine is stopped or running, and a three-impulse signal is accompanied by the exhibition of a cautionary " men on " indication, which is cancelled only when the cage reaches a predetermined position or the highest number on the dial is signalled. Each ratchet wheel has its own detent, the first ratchet being released and returning to the initial position after the lapse of a period determined by a dash-pot or like device, the second with the pointer remaining to register the signal until released by the first impulse of a succeeding signal or as mentioned above. The words " start " and " stop " are provided on a vertically sliding plate i<1> raised by a bar i<2> mounted by parallel links i<4> on a bar i<3> capable of horizontal movement. When the engine is running, the bar i<3> is moved by governor or like means to the position shown with the bar i<2> in the path of a pin f<3> which is raised by a signal impulse, so that the first impulse given when the engine is running raises the plate i' and exhibits the word " stop " through an opening contiguous to the dial numeral 1. The plate is maintained raised by a detent i'. When the engine stops, the bar i<3> moves so that the detent i' lies in the path of a sliding member i<8> raised by a signal impulse, so that the first impulse when the engine is stopped trips the detent i', allowing the plate i<1> to fall and exhibit the word "start." The cautionary " men " signal is behind an opening a<5> normally obscured by a shutter carried by a slidable bar a<6> maintained raised by a catch h. After the third impulse, followed by sufficient pause, means controlled by the dash-pot device releases the catch h, so that the shutter falls and exhibits the cautionary signal. When eight impulses are registered by the pointer, a shrouding holds the actuating member out of engagement with the first ratchet wheel, and a pin on the second ratchet wheel engages and raises a sliding bar e" connected to a lever e<12>, one end of which raises the bar e<6> and obscures the cautionary signal, and the other end, acting through a link m<7>, raises the detent f and allows the pointer to return to zero. Similar cancellation is obtained when all electro-magnet m is energized on the cage reaching a predetermined position. The circuit of the magnet m is controlled by a switch member operated by a pin l<3> on the pointer l<4> of the usual depth indicator. The switch member comprises a pivoted tube l<1> containing mercury, and provided with fingers l<2>, one of which is in the path of the pin. The pin tilts the tube past the horizontal position and the mercury, running to the other end cf the tube, completes the movement, during which a contact l<5> on the tube wipes over contacts l<6> in the magnet circuit.
