Abstract
1,189,085. Submerged models. D. TONG. 26 Sept., 1968 [1 April, 1968], No. 15488/68. Heading A6S. A power-driven model, e.g. a submarine 2, has a depth control device comprising a float 14 mounted on arm 16, which is pivotally mounted at 18 to the body of the submarine so as to allow vertical movement of the float within the conning tower 10, which arm is connected via a pin 30 located in slot 22 to an arm 28, on which arm is a shaft on which are mounted, outside the body, elevators 24. The end 32 of arm 28 constitutes a counterweight. In operation, the body is flooded with water via holes 6 (not shown) and 8. When the submarine tends to rise or fall relative to the float, the arm 16 operates the elevators so as to counteract the rise or fall, under the drive of the power unit. A slidable weight 38 may be provided, located in slot 36 on arm 16 to allow adjustment of the depth of travel. When the weight is in its extreme position away from 18, the upward force exerted by float 14 is small; hence the diving of the submarine is corrected only slowly, and the submarine may be made to dive and surface continuously. With the weight in the other extreme position nearest to 18, the submarine remains on the surface. The arm can be held in this position by engaging sliding bar 46 in notch 44 on the weight, or by contacting a similar bar with a cam surface on the weight (see Fig. 5, not shown).
