Abstract

1,188,286. Sealing cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 29 June, 1967 [1 July, 1966; 17 Nov., 1966], Nos. 29704/66 and 51499/66. Heading H2C. [Also in Division D1] To form a gas seal in a length of sheathed multi-conductor cable 11, such as a metal or plastics sheathed plastics or paper insulated telephone cable, a length of the cable insulation is removed, a layer 12 of porous material, e.g. cotton bandage, is wrapped around the exposed cable body 13 and the preferably roughened adjacent cable insulation, a loose covering 14 of flexible sheet material impervious to an impregnant such as cold-setting polyester, epoxy or acrylic resin is sealed to the cable as by tape 16, and impregnant is introduced into the enclosed space so formed, after which pressure is applied to the outer surface of the covering 14 to fill the porous layer 12 and the interstices in the cable body 13 with impregnant. Covering 14 may be formed from a sheet of polyethylene, the longitudinal seam being sealed by heat sealing or adhesive tape 15, and the impregnant being injected through a slit 10 in covering 14, which is subsequently sealed by adhesive tape. Pressure may be applied to the filled covering by manipulation or by an elastic bandage. Seepage of impregnant along the cable may be prevented by bindings 17 applied to the insulated cable conductors. Covering 14 may be retained and a layer of PVC tape applied overall.
