Abstract
1,188,121. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 3 April, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 14492/66. Headings F2E and F2F. In a disc brake at least one friction pad assembly 44, 46 is engageable with a brake rotor 40, a member carries the friction pad assembly for movement towards and away from the rotor and the member includes pad guides 42 for guiding the radial edges of a back plate 48 of the friction pad assembly 44 during movement of the latter, the guides 42 extending to within a short distance of the rotor face such that the radial edge regions of the back plate or portions of the radial edge regions are axially thicker than the remainder of the back plate and the axial thickness of the thickened regions or portions is greater than that of the distance between the guides 42 and the rotor face. As shown in Fig. 5 (accompanying the complete specification) the disc brake is adapted to be applied by oppositely-moving pistons 34, 36, the former acting to apply the brake pad assembly 44 directly and the latter piston 36 is adapted to act on the movable housing 30 to urge the friction pad 46 against the opposite face of the rotor 40. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4 (accompanying the Provisional Specification) the back plate 10 is provided with holes 22 through which the friction material 20 can pass to form a thin layer 24 on the rear face of the plate and bowed portions 18 are provided on the radial edge regions 16 of the back plate. A thin layer of friction material, having an axial thickness commensurate with that of the thicker edge region, is thereby established on the rear face of the brake plate to assist in the reduction of brake squeal.
