Abstract

1,187,963. Microwave heating. MICROWAVE INSTRUMENTS Ltd. 28 April, 1967 [29 April, 1966; 30 Jan., 1967], Nos. 18955/66 and 4508/67. Heading H5H. [Also in Division G1 Microwave apparatus for the measurement of moisture in a sheet W of e.g. paper or fabric comprises a waveguide 2 having an offset section 8 provided with a slit 12 for the reception of the sheet. The slit extends through the obliquely arranged connecting sections 10 and lies in the median E-plane of the section 8. The upper half of the section 8 is mounted upon pivots 22 incoporating spiral springs (not shown) which press the waveguide half against the sheet. Direct contact between the waveguide halves and the sheet may be prevented by allowing controlled escape of a compressed fluid through permeable membranes arranged over the open sides of the two halves. The compressed fluid may be fed directly into the waveguide section 8 through pipes 102, 104, fluid-tight seals 114 of e.g. polythene being provided in the main wave guide 2. Distribution manifolds may be provided on both halves of the section 8. In an alternative construction, compressed fluid is fed into the hollow sides of the waveguide halves and allowed to escape through perforations in the edges opposite the sheet. The main waveguide 2 may be of hairpin configuration either in the H-plane (as shown) or the E-plane. Several such hairpins may be arranged side by side and the sheet passed through them successively. They are coupled by switching means which enable different combinations to be inserted in series between a generator and a detector. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7, the split waveguide section 8a is short-circuited at 9 and is connected to a power source through a directional coupler 92. The arms of the directional coupler are connected to detectors 94, 96 for measurement and comparison of the incident and reflected waves. In a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown), the cranked portion is arranged to extend parallel to the edges of an elongated sheet and is connected at either end to transversely extending sections respectively providing input and output.
