Abstract
1,181,129. Microwave heating. CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 6 July, 1967 [7 July, 1966], No. 31130/67. Heading H5M. [Also in Division F4] A dielectric heating apparatus, e.g. for drying webs, comprises a rectangular waveguide 13 along which a travelling wave is propagated and through which a web 12 is moved in a direction parallel to the wave propagation, the operating mode of the wave being the TE 01 mode and producing a concentration of electric field in the portion of the waveguide occupied by the web which extends parallel rather than perpendicular to the web. The microwave energy is fed in from perpendicular or inclined side arms 14. In another embodiment the energy is fed directly into one end of the waveguide and the web enters through a transverse slot in the bottom of the guide. The waveguides are terminated by absorbing wedges to prevent standing waves. In another embodiment energy is fed in step by step to the waveguide from a superimposed slotted waveguide (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). In Fig. 7 (not shown), the energy is fed into the waveguide from a transverse waveguide with oppositely inclined slots. The web may travel in either direction along the waveguide although it is preferred that it travels in the direction of wave propagation.
