Abstract
1,255,690. Microwave heating apparatus; aerials. CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 20 Oct., 1969 [21 Oct., 1968], No. 51336/69. Headings H4A and H5H. The proportion of energy which is available for useful work is varied along the length of a waveguide by means of a ridge or ridges. Thus, the rectangular waveguide 10 is provided with two pairs of ridges 14, 15 and 16, 17 between which the electric field is concentrated. The presence of the ridges produces a decreased intensity in the vicinity of a workpiece 13 (e.g. a tube containing material to be heated or a set of axially aligned radiating slots). The ridges may be tapered to obtain a longitudinal variation in distribution of the field, e.g. in order to compensate for attentuation and to obtain uniform heating or radiation. The tapering may be linear or curvilinear. This effect may also be achieved by means of graded dielectric loading near the narrow sides of the waveguide. The Specification also describes an elliptical waveguide with two pairs of ridges (Fig. 5, not shown) and a rectangular waveguide with more than two pairs of ridges. The workpiece may consist of a lamina moving through longitudinal slots in the waveguide in a direction parallel with the narrow sides. Alternatively, the workpiece may move parallel to the axis of the guide and be so arranged that the parts to be heated are located between the opposed ridges. Where the waveguide is used as an aerial, the ridges are stated to have the effect of reducing side lobes.
