Abstract

1,187,934. Coated wires. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. 6 June, 1968 [19 June, 1967], No. 27066/68. Heading B2K. [Also in Divisions Cl, C7 and H1] In a method of making an electric incandescent lamp the lead-in wires, which are composed of tungsten and/or molybdenum, are coated with the phosphate or phosphide of tungsten or molybdenum, or a mixture thereof, before being sealed into the vitreous envelope. In one embodiment tungsten phosphate glass is made by dissolving tungsten trioxide in orthophosphoric acid and the glass is then dissolved in water at the rate of 50 grams to 100 ml. The solution is concentrated by evaporation and the wire is then dipped and dried first at 400‹C and then at 1,000‹C. In another embodiment the phosphate is formed in situ by exposing a tungsten or molybdenum wire to phosphorus pentoxide vapour generated by heating orthophosphoric acid and/or metaphosphoric acid to a temperature of 700‹C-1,000‹.C. In a further embodiment the phosphate is vapour-deposited on the wire. The coating preferably consists of tungsten phosphate glass in which the W:P atom ratio is in the range 1:5.9 to 1:9, particularly 1:7.6, or molybdenum phosphate glass in which the Mo:P atom ratio is in the range 1:5 to 1:10. Phosphide coatings are formed by heating the corresponding phosphate coating at a temperature of 700‹C-1,100‹C in a reducing, e.g. hydrogen, atmosphere.
