Abstract

A getter layer of magnesium, calcium, strontium or barium or a mixture thereof for e.g. an incandescent lamp is provided by heating in the lamp, in contact with a reducing agent, a material of the general formula (MeO)nXOm where Me is Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, n is greater than 1, X is a metal and m is the valency of X divided by 2. Examples of the material are Ba3WO6, Ba2CaMoO6, Ba2TiO4, Ba3TaO5.5, BaSr2MoO6 and Ba2LaTaO6. In an example a tungsten filament of an incandescent lamp is coated with Ba3WO6 by dipping, spraying, painting or cataphoresis. The lamp after degassing and sealing is then burnt at a voltage 10-15% higher than the normal lamp voltage. The reducing agent may be phosphorus, tungsten or zirconium.
