118,687. Hanman, J. Sept. 11, 1917. Foot-cycles are provided with treadle-lever driving-gear comprising a forwardly and upwardly inclined lever c mounted by a transverse axle b upon the footboard a and cut away at c<2> to engage with a pin a<1> on the footboard, the motion being transmitted to the wheel by a rack-bar e, e' pivoted to the lever and adjustable in length. The portion e of the bar may be internally screwthreaded or have a screw-threaded end part e<2> to receive the end e' of the rack portion e<1> of the bar; or the bar may be formed of telescopic parts pinned or otherwise fixed or locked together. The bar is adjustably connected to the lever as by holes n<1> and a pin n<2>, the end of the bar being placed over an ext-ension n on the lever or between a pair of such extensions; or the end of the bar may be pivoted to a block through which is screwed a rod rotatably mounted in a pair of spaced lugs upon the lever. The pinion g is formed in one with a ratchet-wheel h and rotatably mounted upon the wheel axle i, the wheel h being engaged by a pawl k upon the road wheel.
