Abstract

Crutches. - A crutch comprises an arm-rest connected to the frame by one or more sliding pins and helical cushioning-springs, an adjustable handle, and an adjustable foot-piece provided with a. rubber ferrule. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the arm-rest 2, fitted with a stretched leather strip 3, is formed with an axle 4 sliding in a bearing 5 on the upper bar 6 of a wooden or cast or bent metal crutch frame. The axle 4 is surrounded by a helical spring 7. The frame is fitted with a cross-bar or brace 10, with an adjustable handle 12, and with a foot-piece 14 passing through a hole 11<a> in the lower part of the frame and adjustably connected between the side members by one or more bolts and nuts 16. The foot-piece is fitted with a, rubber ferrule 15. In modifications, the arm-rest may be provided with two spring-surrounded axles sliding in the upper part of the frame, or with a central axle and spring and one or more plain guide-rods, and the rubber ferrule 15 may be fitted to a rod 17, Fig. 4, sliding in the foot-piece 14 and controlled by a spring 18 and pin and slot 19. The spring 18 may be placed within the foot-piece 14 so as to bear on the upper end of the rod 17.
