Abstract

1,186,024. Applying labels. NEW JERSEY MACHINE CORP. 11 April, 1967 [15 April, 1966], No. 16458/67. Heading B8F. A label L is supported by substantially all one face, with the other face exposed to be adhesively engaged by a picker 115 which carries it to the position where it is applied to an article. In the form illustrated labels cut from a web W by a guillotine 50, 51 are supported at their edges by members 65, 66 until they have been gripped by a suction head 90. The supports 65 are then moved aside and the suction head swings downwardly about a shaft 106 to meet the picker 115 which then swings downwardly to a vertical position where an applicator (135) (Fig. 4, not shown) swings between the prongs of the applicator to push the label through onto a bottle. The picker 115 may either be smeared with adhesive by a roller 125 moved between the picker and an adhesive roller 130, or either the picker or the suction head may be heated to activate a thermoplastic adhesive on the face of the label engaging the picker. The feed of the web W is controlled by a photocell 25 detecting markings 26 on the web.
