Abstract

1347158 Labelling AVERY PRODUCTS CORP 9 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 51864/71 Heading B8F An apparatus for applying labels to flat articles, such as envelopes, comprises means for feeding the articles from a stack to a labelling head while positively gripping them between first and second pinch rolls, sensing means detecting the presence or absence of an article at the first pinch rolls, and means responsive to the sensing means for operating or stopping the feed means when an article is respectively absent or present. In the embodiment shown envelopes 18 are fed successively from a stack by intermittently driven feed rolls 20, 21 to continuously driven first and second pinch rolls 26, 27; 32, 33 which are spaced apart a distance less than the length of the envelope so that the envelope is being gripped by at least one set of rolls as it passes over labelling table 30. Pressuresensitive labels 40 are peeled from backing web 41 when the web is pulled by roll 75 around peel bar 42. The absence of an envelope between rolls 26, 27 is sensed by device 125, causing feed rolls 20, 21 to be actuated and the passage of the leading edge of the delivered envelope past light-source photo-cell arrangement 105, 106 causes the roll 75 to be driven after a suitable time delay to begin to deliver a label. Another light-source photo-cell arrangement 61, 62 stops roll 75 after it has taken up one label length of backing web. As shown, roll 43 presses down the label but since the label is fed at the same speed as the envelope this roll may be omitted leaving rolls 32, 33 to ensure proper adhesion.
