1,185,774. Mineral insulated cable. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 6 Feb., 1969 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 6008/68. Heading H1A. A. An apparatus for making a mineral insulated cable comprises a metal sheath tube 2 supported vertically and closed at its lower end 6 and containing at least one conductor 1 in a guide 5 formed with one or more passages 11 in it or between it and the wall of the tube (32) (Fig. 3, not shown) and also incorporating a filter 14. Mineral insulating powder in a fluidized state is fed through 11 into an evacuated space 7 and is compacted by evacuating the air entrained in the powder through the filter 14, moving the guide 5 relative to tube 2 to form a space between 5 and the powder and repeating the sequence of steps. The filter may be cleared of any powder clogging it by injecting a pulse of compressed gas through one of two filters 14, (14<SP>1</SP>) and evacuating through the other, the filters being each connected via a two-way valve to a vacuum pump or a source of compressed gas. In each sequence of steps, the conductor guide is raised a predetermined distance, and a reciprocating friction coupling provided for reciprocating the guide which may be used as a ram for tamping each increment of powder. Increasing the speed of filling may be provided by using a filling space (32) between the guide (25) and the wall of the tube, in association with larger filters (34).
