Abstract

1,185,252. Spray producers. PARKERHANNIFIN CORP. 4 March, 1968 [8 March, 1967], No. 10443/68. Heading B2E. A spray nozzle comprises a nozzle body assembly defining a liquid passage which includes a vortex chamber having spin slots leading thereinto and having a discharge orifice from which a whirling liquid emerges as a hollow conical spray. The body also includes a variable area valve inwardly adjacent the vortex chamber, comprising a flexible diaphragm having a central opening coaxial with the discharge orifice, the diaphragm being flexed away from a seat in the assembly under a predetermined increase in pressure of liquid behind said diaphragm to form an annular orifice through which liquid flows into the Vortex chamber to augment the flow of liquid through the spin slots, one side of the diaphragm and seat forming a wall of the vortex chamber, the other side of the diaphragm being exposed to pressure of the liquid in the liquid passage. An embodiment of the invention in the form of a fuel spray system, is illustrated in Fig. 2, wherein liquid fuel flows through the outer groove 16 in a spacer 11 and through openings 18 in a diaphragm 10 to an annular groove 19 formed in the inner face of an orifice plate 9. This plate is provided with tangential spin slots 23 which impart of whirling motion to the fuel as it passes into the periphery of the vortex chamber constituted by recess 21. When the pressure of the liquid fuel exceeds a predetermined value, the diaphragm will flex away from the seat 27 to provide an additional flow of liquid through the annular space so-formed, to augment the flow of liquid through the spin slots.
