A portable lock is secured to a recess 18 (Fig. 1), e.g. in the door frame of a door 22, by a hook bar 10, 16 over which is passed aligned slots in a slideway 11 and in a sliding locking plate 14. The plate 14 is then slid from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 1 so that a projection 26 (Fig. 5) on plate 14 engages one of several spaced abutments (as shown, holes 28) in the hook bar 10, and the plate 14 is locked, e.g. by a padlock 42 engaging lugs 39, 40 (Fig. 1). The slideway 11 is formed of two spaced plates. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the aligned slots in the slideway and plate 14 extend to and open at the bottom of these members, so that the members can be lowered over the hookbar rather than slid longitudinally along the bar.
