Novel o-anilino-phenylacetic acids of the general formula wherein R 1 is a low alkyl or alkoxy group, a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom or the trifiuoromethyl group; R 2 is hydrogen or is defined as R 1 ; R 3 is hydrogen, a low alkyl or alkoxy group or a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom; R 4 is hydrogen, a low alkyl or alkoxy group, a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom or the trifluoromethyl group; R 5 is a low alkyl group; and R 6 and R 7 are each hydrogen, a low alkyl group or a benzyl group; and salts thereof with inorganic and organic bases are prepared by hydrolysis of an o-anilino-phenylacetic acid ester or an o-anilino-phenylacetonitrile of the respective formulµ wherein R 8 is a hydrocarbon radical having at most 10 carbon atoms, or, when R 8 is the benzyl radical, by hydrogenolysis of an o-anilinophenylacetic acid ester of the second general formula above with catalytically activated hydrogen; followed optionally by conversion of the product into a salt thereof with an inorganic or organic base. o-Anilino-phenylacetonitriles of the third general formula above wherein R 6 and R 7 are hydrogen atoms are prepared by alkylation of an appropriately substituted N - phenylanthranilic acid alkyl ester, reduction of the resulting substituted N-alkyl-N-phenyl-anthranilic acid alkyl ester, reaction of the obtained substituted o - anilino - benzyl alcohol with phosphorus tribromide and treatment of the produced substituted o-anilino-benzyl bromide with potassium cyanide. o - Anilino - phenylacetic acid esters of the second general formula above are prepared by reaction of an o-anilino-phenylacetonitrile of the third general formula above with a solution of hydrogen chloride and an alcohol, followed by treatment with water. Pharmaceutical compositions having antiphlogistic, analgesic and antipyretic activity comprise an o-anilino-phenylacetic acid of the first general formula above or a salt thereof with an inorganic or organic base in combination with an inert carrier.
