Abstract

1,183,925. Making combustible gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 1 June, 1967 [3 June, 1966], No. 25451/67. Heading C5E. In a method of making methane-rich gases by catalytically cracking hydrocarbons having a maximum B.P. of 350‹ C. with steam in the presence of hydrogen, the reactants are preheated to not more than 350‹ C. and then passed over a hydrogenating cracking catalyst, e.g. Ni or Co on an alumina or magnesium-aluminium silicate carrier. The catalyst may include 0-01 to 0-1% Pt or Pd, and the hydrogen may be obtained by recycling some product gas, or by delivering coke oven gas or refinery gas to the reaction. Preheating of the reactants is mainly by heat exchange with the product gas, and in one embodiment, see figure (not shown) petrol is heated to 160‹ C., mixed with hydrogen and heated to 330‹ to 350‹ C. and then mixed with super-heated steam at 27 atmospheres pressure. The method enables higher boiling hydrocarbons having an average of 10 to 25 C atoms per molecule, e.g. diesel and fuel oils, to be gasified without the formation of soot.
