Abstract

Fuel gas is made from a hydrocarbon distillate by a two-stage process, namely: catalytically hydrocracking the distillate in the absence of steam in one zone and gasifying part at least of the products of the hydrocracking in a second zone. The gasification step may comprise a partial oxidation process (not described) or continuous steam reforming with a nickel catalyst and may comprise two reformers in parallel, see Fig. 1 (not shown) one dealing with the lighter fractions of the hydrocracking to produce a CH4-rich gas, and one the heavier fractions to produce an H2-rich gas. The first reformer may be replaced by a thermal hydrocracker, see Fig. 2 (not shown), and the CH4-and H2-rich gases may be mixed together, if desired with an external gas, e.g. LPG, natural gas, refinery gas or tail gas. The flow diagrams (Figs. 1, 2) make clear the complete process, which includes purification, recycling of H2 to the first (hydrocracking) zone and recycling of C11 + fractions to the first zone. The preferred hydrocracking catalyst is silica-alumina with one or more of Group VI and Group VIII metals or their oxides, sulphides and selenides, other supports being mentioned. Preferred feedstocks are those boiling from 200 DEG to 650 DEG F., and products include olefins and benzol. Five specific examples are described.
