Abstract

1,183,807. Plate casting apparatus. REICHHOLD CHEMICALS Inc. 3 Feb., 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 5701/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B6] A machine for casting plates e.g. printing plates from liquid thermosetting plastics material comprises a heated lower platen 3, a ring 6 for clamping a matrix to this platen and to provide a coffer dam for containing liquid plastics material, a heated upper platen 2 hinged at its rear end to the lower platen, means for closing the platens by movement about the hinge 5, a cutter bar 8 positioned on the rear of the lower face of the upper platen and second and third cutter bars 9 and 10 along the sides of the lower face of the upper platen, said bars engaging the matrix within the area bounded by the ring 6 when the platens are closed so that flask is cut off from a plate east therein. Deflashing before the plastics material has set prevents cracks which form in the thicker mass of the flask from extending into the moulding. The cutter bars preferably each comprise a knife edge and may be chrome plated to facilitate release from the plastics material.
