Abstract

A control spring for a valve which modifies the braking pressure according to vehicle loading is connected to a link which may be attached to an abutment on a vehicle part in either of two spaced positions such that deflection of the spring is altered by changing from one position to the other. This facilitates setting up of the spring since in one position a predetermined clearance is obtained between the valve and its operating member, and on changing to the other position a known prestressing of the spring is obtained. In Fig. 2 the valve (not shown) is operated by a lever 42 pivoted on a pin 43 fixed by a bracket 41 to a sprung part of the vehicle. The lever is attached to one end of a twin-spiral spring 46, the other end of which is received by a collar 56. The collar 56 is connected by an adjustable link 51 to an eye 57 carrying a bolt 59. For setting up, the bolt 59 is inserted in a hole 61 and the link 51 adjusted for a predetermined clearance between the lever 42 and the valve (X in Fig. 1, not shown). The bolt 59 is then screwed into a hole 60 to produce a predetermined stressing of the spring. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the eye 57 is attached to an eccentric which can be rotated through 180 degrees for the alternative positions. In another modification (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the link 51 is of fixed length and the relationship between the lever 42 and the valve is adjustable by a set-screw. The valve may be mounted on an unsprung part of the vehicle.
