Abstract

1,264,156. Brakes. KNORR-BREMSE G.m.b.H. 10 June, 1969 [21 June, 1968], No. 29451/69. Heading F2F. A double brake cylinder for rail vehicles has an applying piston 13 acting through rod 18 to apply the brake, and a second piston 10 which adds its effort to piston 13 in proportion to the loading of the vehicle. Pressure from control valve 1 via pipe 5 moves the applying piston 13 against its return spring 19 in a rightward direction, drawing a threaded head-pin 14 with it. A freely running nut 35 on this pin rotates on bearings 38, 40 under the influence of spring 39, to follow up this motion until it is arrested by engagement between the nut and a shoulder 46 inside the piston 10. Normally, in the deenergized position shown, a valve 23, 26 prevents feed of pressure through pipe 2 to the piston 10, and moreover a further valve 23, 21 vents it to atmosphere. Rightward movement of the nut 35 on actuation of piston 13, reverses the conditions of these valves, by withdrawal of pin 14 which holds the valves in their normal condition against spring pressure. If the vehicle is loaded, pressure is supplied to pipe 2, which now, because valve 23, 26 is open and 23, 21 closed, acts on piston 10 to move it rightward. This movement engages the nut and shoulder surfaces 46, 47 to prevent the nut running back and the two pistons move together, the holding piston applying an additional force proportional to the load through the nut and pin 14 to the piston 13 and so to the rod 18.
