Abstract

1,182,671. Coating. PIRELLI S.p.A. 10 Jan., 1967 [11 Jan., 1966], No. 1310/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B5] A reinforcing element consists of a support made of a vulcanizable, or curable composition and a layer of fibres permanently laid down in an oriented manner on at least a part of one surface of the support. The composition may be natural or synthetic rubber, synthetic, elastomeric, or plastomeric polymers. The fibres may be natural, artificial or synthetic non-metallic materials or of metallic materials. The support itself may contain fibres disposed randomly or oriented, and being fully incorporated and uniformly distributed in and/or throughout the support. The two groups of . fibres may be disposed to extend in the same or different directions. The fibres may have all the same length or be of two different lengths. The reinforcing element may be completed with the addition of a layer of uncured vulcanisable rubber laid upon the layer of oriented fibres. Another of the reinforcing elements may be laid over this vulcanisable layer such that the layer of fibres of this further element comes into contact with the layer. The further layer may also contain fibres disposed randomly or oriented. Two or more of the reinforcing elements may be superimposed such that the support of one unit is in contact with the layer of fibres of the adjacent unit or such that the layers of fibres are in contact with each other. In Figure 5 an adhesive material is applied as a coating to the exposed surface of the moving support 1 of uncured vulcanisable rubber by means 15. Fibres 2 falling from hopper 10 are carried to an electrostatic device 11 constituted by two earthed metal plates 12 and 13 and an accelerating grid 14 to which is applied high voltage electric current. The electrostatic device projects fibres upwardly against the adhesivecoated surface of the support in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the support. The fibres are then caused to be laid down and pressed against the adhesive-coated surface in an oriented manner by mechanical means 17 constituted by shoes, rollers, brushes. A layer 3 of uncured vulcanizable rubber is applied to the layer of laid down fibres 2 by means of a roller 16 coupled to roller 9. To improve the adhesion of two reinforcing elements to each other, the superimposed elements may be subjected to mechanical action, e.g. passage between rotating cylinders and/or treatment with static mechanical compression, hammering, brushing, punching. The reinforcing elements can be employed in the manufacture of any article intended to be provided with a reinforcing structure, e.g. a pneumatic tyre, hose, conveyor belt.
