Abstract

1,182,307. Photographic materials for diffusion transfer processes. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORP. Jan. 11, 1967 [Jan. 11, 1966], No. 37633/69. Divided out of 1,182, 302. Heading G2C. A photographic material for use in the diffusion transfer process comprises a support coated with a silver halide emulsion layer and optionally a translucent second layer, either or both layers containing an opaque substance in an amount which does not prevent exposure of the emulsion through the second layer and a humectant in the layer or layers containing the opaque substance. The material preferably contains a top layer with a silver precipitating agent but alternatively such a layer may be formed during development if the developer contains such an agent and a polymer. On imagewise and development in the presence of a silver halide solvent, the negative image formed in the emulsion layer is masked by the opaque substance so that only the positive image is seen. In the examples, a paper support is coated with a gelatino silver halide emulsion containing alpha methyl glucoside as humectant overcoated with a gelatino titanium dioxide layer and then with a image-receiving layer containing lead sulphide. The material is imagewise exposed and developed to produce a denser positive image than a material not containing humectant. Alternatively, the titanium dioxide overcoat may be dispersed with and titanium dioxide alpha methyl glucoside and silica (see Specification 1,182, 308) may be incorporated in the silver halide emulsion. Glycerine is also specified as a humectant. The opaque substance may be formed in the material after imagewise exposure thereof.
