Abstract

1,181,757. Vessel closures. SWINNEY BROS. Ltd. 21 Oct., 1968, No. 49846/68 Heading F2P. [Also in Division E2] A pressure vessel closure comprises a circular cover 2, an angularly-displaceable link plate 3 pivotally mounted on a central pillar 2 of the cover, and a plurality of arcuate locking members 7 positioned around the periphery of the cover, each locking member being pivoted by pin 6 at one end to the cover and being pivoted by a pin 8 at the other end to a link 9 which is in turn pivoted to the link plate whereby rotation of the link plate by a handle 4 causes the locking members to move into engagement with a groove around the inside circumference of the vessel opening to lock the cover in position. The links in the locked position are positioned over centre to produce a self-locking action. An 0-ring seal is disposed between the vessel and cover, tapered ramps on the heels 13 of the locking members permitting progressive compression of the seal ring. As shown, the cover is hinged to the vessel by links 22 and 20. Alternatively, the cover may be carried by a suspension arm. Ramps 5 are provided on the vessel, said ramps engaging the handle 4 in the unlocked position of the latter and breaking the cover/vessel joint. The cover is provided with a screw pressure release valve 15, the body of which has an interference engagement at 16 with one of the locking members so that the latter cannot be moved to their unlocked position unless said valve has been opened.
