Abstract

1,181,735. Selective printing. MOHAWK DATA SCIENCES CORP. 16 Aug., 1967 [19 Sept., 1966], No. 37640/67. Heading B6F. Type in endless frames.-Separate typecarriers 8 with one or more characters 10 on each are movable around a closed-loop race in which they are retained by a spring 30, the loop being in a plane parallel with a web 2. The type-carriers 8 are channel shaped with a central recess 14 for the spring 30 and one side surface 16 is slightly angled and carries raised characters. The other channel is formed with teeth 20 so that a gear 31 can drive the typecarriers around the loop. The type carriers are guided between the gear 31 and an idler 22 by straight sections of track 26, 28 shaped to loosely conform to the shape of the typecarriers 8. Arrangement of hammers.-There may be a hammer in each character position, a hammer to span two character spaces, or a reduced number of hammers coupled with lateral paper shifting. Type-surfaces.-The characters are arranged on the side of the channel shaped type-carriers, at a spacing that may be equal, less or more than the spacing of the character positions. The reduced or increased spacing produces the "Doppler effect" so that sequential comparison within a single comparator is possible.
