Abstract

1,142,909. Selective printing. CREED & CO. Ltd. 7 July, 1967 [8 July, 1966], No. 31329/67. Heading B6F. Type sliding in frames.-In a printer for the print-out of a computer and other devices a series of type-slugs (24) 25 are driven through a guide channel 3 and as they pass a printing station the type slugs are attached by a magnetic strip 17 so as to provide a solid backing during printing. The magnet exerts a braking effect on the slugs, keeps them close together during printing, and prevents chatter. Power devices.-The slugs may be cyclically driven by sprocket wheels 7 engaging rollers fitted to the rear of the slugs or they may be advanced electromagnetically by the alternate operation of a row of coils placed at the rear run of the type-slugs. Printing surfaces.-Five characters are formed on each type-slug by integral moulding or coined on a metallic U-shaped part (23), Fig. 2, not shown, which is moulded in the slug. Operation.-Each cycle of the type slugs around the guide channel is detected by a permanent magnet 20, Fig. 6, sensing a crosspin 22 in one of them.
