Abstract

1,181,702. Granulating steel slag. INTERNATIONAL STEEL SLAG CORP. March 9, 1967, No. 11227/67. Heading C7X. The Specification discloses an apparatus for granulating molten steel slags by injecting a stream or streams of water into the slag as disclosed in Specifications 1,029,677, 1,029,678 and 1,137,836 with the addition of means for removing the granulated slag from the granulator while the granulation is in progress and further means to hydraulically transfer the granulated slag slurry in correlation with the granulation of the steel slag. Specific jet velocities and volumes of water for granulating particular quantities of slag are described. The granulated slag from the granulator 82K is removed by screen 224 into a tote box 234 while the slag slurry containing undersize slag particles falls through the screen 224 into the tank 210. The slurry is removed from tank 210 via outlet 236 by a centrifugal pump 240 and discharged via pipe 246. A float valve (254) in tank 210 in conjunction with a water source maintains the level of the water in the tank and a thermostat control (276) maintains the water and slag slurry temperature below 212‹F. e. g. at 185‹F. The minimum velocity of the slag slurry in conduit 246 is 17 feet per second and the float valve (254) varies the water input to maintain this velocity. The slurry should have up to 17% slag to water ratio and the average rate of output of water and granulated slag slurry from the granulator should be equal to the average rate of input into the granulator.
