Abstract

Ferrous metal articles are coated with polyethylene by applying to the metal surface an oxidation promoting substance e.g. iron naphthenate, cobalt octoate, peroxides, and then sufficient polyethylene to give the desired final coating thickness, and heating the assembly to partially oxidize the polyethylene only in a superficial zone adjacent the ferrous metal surface and to cause fusion of the polyethylene. The oxidation promoting substance may be present in an intermediate layer not greater than 100Á thick in admixture with a thermosetting resin e.g. epoxy-phenolic, phenolic or polyurethane resin, so that the polyethylene is oxidized only in a superficial zone adjacent the resin layer. Alternatively the resin layer may be applied to the ferrous metal surface, followed by the application of the oxidationpromoting substance and then the polyethylene. The Examples relate to the coating of degreased steel panels.
