Abstract
An adhesive composition, used for bonding metals to polyolefine resins (see Group VIII), is a curable polymer mixture comprising a peroxide catalyst and an oily polymer or copolymer of a C4 to C6 conjugated diolefine, which polymer or copolymer has been modified by incorporation of oxygen in the structure thereof. The oily polymer or copolymer may be further modified with a cross-linking agent, which may be styrene, vinyltoluene, a halostyrene, a vinylnaphthalene, an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, or an allyl ester, such as diallyl phthalate. The adhesive may be cured at elevated temperature and pressure, and the cure may be followed by a post-cure at elevated temperature. An oily copolymer of butadiene and styrene is prepared by charging into an autoclave, with a mechanical agitator, butadiene, styrene, straight-run mineral spirits boiling at 150 DEG to 200 DEG C., dioxane, isopropanol and finely divided sodium. After 4-5 hours, the catalyst was destroyed and removed, and the solvent stripped out. Oxygen may be incorporated by blowing this oil with air or oxygen, preferably in the presence of a solvent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon (toluene in Example II), and a catalyst, e.g. an organic salt, such as the naphthenate, octoate or oleate, of a metal, such as cobalt, lead, iron or manganese. Alternatively, oxygen may be incorporated by adding an anhydride of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, preferably maleic anhydride to the oil after polymerization, and heating.
