Abstract

1,179,624. Sealing by stapling. H. NEIDECKER. 16 March, 1967 [23 April, 1966], No. 12453/67. Heading B8C. A machine for sealing the neck of a package of flexible material by means of staples or clips comprises a member 1 which is pivoted by toggle levers 2, 3 into a closed position wherein it holds the neck of the package in a recess 13, and a clip punch 6 driven in a slideway by toggle levers 7, 8, one of these being formed with a cam track 11 in which a pivot 10 of levers 7, 8 rides, such that (in operation) the gathering member 1 is moved to its closed position before the punch 6 has completed its movement. As described, gathering arm 1 is in its fully closed position when the punch 6 has travelled only 25% of its path. A movable clip guide 15 precedes the punch and closes the aperture 13, the guiding of clip 14 (see Fig. 5), taking place between the guide and side 16 of the punch guide. A yieldable connection (e.g. a friction coupling) between punch 6 and clip guide 15 achieves movement of the latter, Fig. 3 (not shown), longitudinal movement of guide 15 being limited by a slot 26; alternative yieldable connectors are helical springs (28, 29), Fig. 4 (not shown), in opposed tension-compression arrangement; or the arrangement of Fig. 5, where a driving lever 32 pivoted to punch 6 drives clip guide 15 before it until a lateral arm 35 rides over a cam 36. Engagement of abutments 37, 38 will effect return of guide 15 during the return stroke of the punch.
